Overland: A Game Review
About Overland
Overland is a tactical survival road-trip game which requires players to save themselves and continue throughout the journey of a not-so-beautiful America. It follows a premise of the Earth being devastated by catastrophe and has permanently changed with most of the sceneries in America vanished. Players would be required to scavenge fuel and other resources as they head directly into a place that could help them survive. You’ll be meeting a lot of people and probably leave them behind soon to survive. Overland is the first internally-developed game from Fingi label and was being inspired with X-Com and Oregon Trail. Overland is so exciting and thrilling to play because it features randomly generated encounters, tactical gameplay, magnificent art direction, spontaneous controls, and continuous narrative.
Review
Overland is a post-apocalyptic road trip simulator game that captured gamers because of its thrilling obstacles and challenges. The game follows a story of you driving around America which was being affected by bugs that come off the ground, devour survivors and burn the place. Your only goal is to get passed all of the overwhelming odds. The users would be given resources and they will have to strategically use the best weapon to defeat or pass the obstacle.
Along the way, you’ll encounter creatures which come in different sizes and shape. These creatures make your road trip exciting as you will do almost every move just to survive them. Even though they are different in appearance, they have one similarity which is attracted to any noise. This means you need to be careful in making your move because even a sound of a bullet, crisp of leaves, accidental fire setting – you will be totally doomed. Overland has a narrow and tight map which is tricky and can be game-decider whether you’ll be liking the game or not.
Overland has two vital objectives on the map. First, you need to be sure that there would be enough fuel to proceed on your journey. Second, there should be a space between the car and the edge of the screen to eliminate debris blocking your car. Well, there are instances that the roads contain no debris but as you progress on your journey, the roads become busier and you’ll be required to clear first the debris before continuing to proceed. This will take time and might cause you some delays in winning the whole thing.
Eliminating debris around the map requires a moving character beside it to help in pushing or pulling. To pull the item, you need an empty space at the back of the character. To push the debris, space is also needed in the form of the character. Thus, in succeeding this move, careful planning is required which you will figure out what’s the best move if it’s push-pull movement.
With the amount of planning needed, there are various weapons and strategies that could help you out. You’ll need various weapons that you could scavenge throughout your journey or you could just pick it up in your current place. Just always think that having many skills could survive you throughout the game and being resourceful would be a great strategy.
However, despite the good gameplay, the only bad thing about Overland is the rewards. You’ll be rewarded a little for a big effort you have put in. Your rewards of surviving are so slight that it will really kill you once your character will be damaged, hurt or defeated along the journey. The developer must think of how to reward the characters equally but sticking to the involving playability of the game.
